Tour de SAC
Seattle Athletic Club is happy to announce the return of the Tour de SAC which will take place in conjunction with the Tour de France from July 3rd -July 25th. This year's program will be more engaging than years past. The cycle instructors will design their class around the actual daily ride of the Tour de France. For example, some days on the tour you will have mountain stages, other days you will have flat or medium mountain stages. Daily prizes will be given away in every class so all participants have the opportunity to win. In addition, if you finish 50% of the tour, i.e. attend 11 classes (on different days), you will be entered into a drawing to receive a Tour de SAC cycle jersey. Those members who participate in the event and are unable to complete 11 classes throughout the tour will be entered into a drawing for a Cycle Cap. Lastly, at the end of the tour we will have a party to celebrate your participation and hard work! As the ride gets closer, stay tuned for more details.

Group Exercise Class Etiquette
By Danielle Zack, Pilates Director
The Seattle Athletic Clubs boasts over 70 group exercise classes a week! Have you tried one yet? As an instructor, I have a short list of suggestions that will make your and the instructor’s experience richer and safer.
1) Introduce yourself to the instructor before class begins. Instructors will notice your presence in class, even if you sneak in and go straight to the back row! So, introduce yourself and inform him/her of any injuries your dealing with so he/she can be aware of your condition.
2) Show up on time (means 5 minutes early to set up your equipment). Instructors build their class around a warm-up and a cool-down, and if you miss the warm up you may hurt yourself.
3) Ask questions! After class, approach the instructor to ask any questions about an exercise or concept you didn’t understand. Instructors love to talk shop.
4) And finally, give feedback! Whether a compliment or a suggestion, an instructor will want to know what you thought. Let his/her manager know what you thought as well because feedback (positive or negative) can only sharpen our awareness and hone our skills to make us better instructors.
We hope to see you in class!

Research shows the golf swing involves very powerful movements of the legs, trunk, and arms. Each of these movements requires an “engine” to accelerate the different body parts. These “engines” are of course muscles — and just like the engine in a car, they require a warm-up before they can operate efficiently. An appropriate warm-up not only permits peak performance right from the first tee, but also helps protect the body from injury.
Over the last several months we have included a collection of warm-up tips in each newsletter for our members who play golf. Now it's time to put them all together to use as reference when you are getting ready to warm up your body before driving from the first tee box. REMEMBER: one cold swing could produce a serious injury with life-long implications.
COMPONENTS OF THE WARM-UP
The ideal warm-up 20-30 minutes and can be broken down into four sections.
GENERAL BODY WARM-UP The best way to warm-up the body is by low intensity activity that uses as many of the large muscle groups as possible. Examples of good warm-up exercises are; brisk walking, climbing a flight of stairs, or simply placing a club behind your back and carefully rotating from side-to-side for several minutes. This portion of the warm-up should take a total of 5-10 minutes.
STRETCHING
Stretching the key muscles used in the golf swing should follow the warm-up. Each stretch should be gently held for about 20 seconds. Pain should not be experienced. A series of 1st-tee stretching exercises are shown in with the golf tips.
GOLF SPECIFIC DRILLS
After stretching, gently swing a short iron (e.g. 9 iron) back and forth several times while slowly building up the tempo. Perform these practice swings both left and right handed. Once you feel loose, add resistance by gently swinging two clubs at once.
PRACTICE If a driving range or hitting area is available; take time to practice your shots. This further helps warm-up the golf muscles plus helps improve timing and consistency. Practice your putting as well and remember... practice does not make perfect, perfect practice makes perfect.

Member Spotlight: Jennifer Blue
The amazing and always bright and shiny Jennifer Blue is this month's member spotlight. "Blue" as I like to call her is one of the most positive, fun spirited, and dedicated clients I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Blue came to me as a friend of another Boot Camp participant, Susie. Susie and Blue joined me for one session to see if Blue would like to join the club. After that session she signed up and started attending our Boot Camp religiously. She may have been a little intimidated at first (most of the Boot Camp participants have been in class for a year or more and are some super strong people!) but that didn't stop her from coming and trying her best every session. After about 5 months she decided she wanted to improve even more and started working one on one with me two other times during the week. Blue now works out 4 times a week (two training sessions and two Boot Camp sessions) and man oh man has she improved. When she started 5 push-ups from her knees was work... now that kid can pump out at least 5 if not 10 perfect push-ups, chest to floor! Not only that but she started learning how to use her body explosively, which is no easy task! She started out jumping on the small plyo box and now can jump on the one that is practically half her height! She has improved her strength in leaps and bounds in thanks to incorporating kettlebells, plyometrics, and explosive movements in her routine. Her next venture is to conquer a pull-up. I have no doubt in my mind that with her mental drive, her willingness to try, her determination, and her increase in strength, that pull up is just around the corner. With her kind of attitude the possibilities are endless. She has already crossed off many of her goals and I hope to get her to many many more. I would like to thank "Blue" for all her hard work and for making my job so rewarding!

HOP-A-THON Recap
By Katrina Yniguez, Personal Fitness Trainer
Adien Yniguez would like to thank everyone who supported her in her HOP-A-THON Tuesday, April 20th. She had a lot of fun and did 172 hops in 2 minutes. She was very excited and said "I helped a lot of kids today". Adien raised $731.20, 87% of that goes directly to patient services and all money raised stays in the North Sound area. There are over 500 families that MDA serves in our area alone, so thank you again for all your donations, providing help and hope to children with muscles that are not strong. All of your support is greatly appreciated!
