Pilates for Back Pain
By Heidi Meyerholtz, Pilates Instructor
Why is Pilates good for back pain? For anyone suffering from general backache to acute pain, Pilates can carry an important role in relieving pain in your back.
I think of Pilates as intelligent, corrective exercise. Pilates exercises your body as well as your mind. It can change the shape of your body. You may not even realize some of the ways you may be moving that are causing stress on your spine. Pilates specifically focuses on and addresses the intrinsic issues that can lead to back pain including poor posture resulting in asymmetry of the muscles, lack of core strength and inflexibility. Pilates teaches you to become more aware of your body and helps to break the bad habits that are contributing to back pain.
Proper alignment of the spine is crucial to back health; when alignment is off, uneven pressure on the spine results. Strengthening weak areas in the body is a major component to good posture. If you sit with your shoulders rounding forward, or tend to stand leaning into one hip, your posture is suffering and you are causing unnecessary strain to your spine and hips. A good Pilates instructor alerts you to these imbalances and then creates a program focused on creating symmetry in your body, allowing you to move more efficiently.

Swim for Life Recap
Last week several members of the club, as well as sixteen teams from TN Multisports, swam in the 13th Annual Swim for Life, benefiting the Puget Sound Blood Center. The morning started out windy and gray with the most chop ever seen for this event on Lake Washington. Determined to overcome these conditions, all of the swimmers and kayakers banded together to paddle and kick from Medina Beach to Madison Park, completing the 2.4 mile swim.
Seattle Athletic Club was proud to sponsor this event with registration reaching 400 swimmers - doubling the 200 swimmers from last year. Congrats, and thank you to everyone who swam or supported the swimmers in kayaks.

Goggles for Open Water Swimming
By Teresa Nelson, USAT Level II Triathlon Coach
Goggles are goggles right? Not necessarily. Just like choosing which layers to put on when going outside, choosing your goggles for open water swimming is a must.
SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER:
- Light reflects off water. The brighter the sun the harder it is to see. Opt for reflective and darker goggles in sun lit water. The TYR metalized Tracer or Nest Pro-Nano are perfect in these conditions.
- Even during overcast days there is still some light reflection from the water. Opt for lightly tinted goggles in this case. The TYR tinted Tracer or Nest Pro Nano in pink, blue or clear are great for these conditions.
- If it is dark and gloomy and the visibility is limited in the water (think lakes that look red, murky, etc) then opt for lighter colored goggles. The clear, pink and blues.
- If the water is super clear then still err on the side of caution and opt for the light reflective goggles.
As for goggles fogging up, it happens, and as athletes we must deal with what is thrown at us. Temperature differential between the water and the air cause the “foggy-ness”.

Improve Your Squash Game with Pilates
By Amy Sommer, Pilates Instructor
So, how can Pilates improve your squash game? Racket sports, by nature, are repeatedly one-sided. Half of the body, generally speaking, is used more than the other half. Also, the rotation required in the torso, let alone the extremities, is significant in the game of squash. Pilates is designed to work the body evenly, building strength in the torso to aide in the mobility of the entire body. A program of specific exercises will work the body more uniformly in order to prevent over development of one side. The custom Pilates workout will also strengthen the deep abdominal muscles providing a stable base from which to hit the ultimate ‘kill shot’.

Christine Moore Fitness Competition Season Recap
Throughout the past 4 years Personal Fitness Trainer Christine Moore has been working hard and competing in numerous bodybuilding, fitness and figure competitions in the Northwest. She has been in 10 competitions, and during this last year Christine has attempted to take her training to the next level by working with some of the top leaders in the industry. During this year, Christine has competed in 3 NPC (National Physique Committee) Amateur State Competitions, all of which she placed in the top 5!
- NPC Washington Ironman Bodybuilding, Figure & Fitness Championships - 2nd Place
- NPC Oregon Ironman Bodybuilding, Figure, Fitness & Bikini Championships – 4th Place
- NPC Washington State Bodybuilding, Figure & Bikini Championships – 4th Place
Christine’s 2nd place finish was a national qualifier, making her eligible to compete at the national level in an IFBB (International Federation of Body Building) Pro Qualifying event. With the level of success Christine had earlier in the year, she was able to travel to Las Vegas during August to compete in the NPC USA Bodybuilding, Figure & Bikini Championships. The top two competitors in each height class for this event receive their Pro Card, entering them into the world of professional bodybuilding. This level of competition hosts over 400 competitors from all over the nation! It was a huge honor for Christine to be accepted into this event and was her first national level competition, and last competition she had planned for this competitive season.
While Christine came up a little short of obtaining her Pro Card in Vegas, she determined to achieve her professional status in the future and will continue to compete, push herself to new limits, learn and experience new things and of course have fun in the process!
If you have questions about becoming involved in Fitness Competitions, or would like to work with Christine to develop a training plan to match your goals, she may be reached at 206-443-1111 or at cmoore@sacdt.com.
